The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Scope of Position:

Develop, design and optimize optical thin film designs and deposition processes/to meet requirements, for sputtering, thermal evaporation, ion assist and electron beam coating processes

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop vacuum deposition coating processes for new products from Visible to LWIR
  • Improve vacuum deposition coating processes for existing products
  • Assist in performing root cause analyses of product failures and implement corrective actions
  • Provide coating support for new business opportunities.

Travel Requirements:

  • 10%, domestic & international. Typical travel includes training, networking opportunities, customer visits, and benchmarking activities as required.

Hours of work:

  • Typical work hours, M-F, 8am-5pm. Extra and off hours may be required during times of heightened project activity in order to meet deliverables.

Required Education:

  • B.S./B.A. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials engineering/science is desired, M.S. preferred.

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience of optical thin film coating experience in a manufacturing environment, significant IR experiences a plus

Required Skills:

  • Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
  • Experience with measuring techniques and testing methods, including spectrophotometry, MIL spec, environmental testing requirements, and Laser damage testing evaluation
  • Thin film coating design software experience (Filmstar, TF Calc, Optilayer)
  • Strong problem solving/analysis skills
  • Must have strong presentation and technical writing skills to enable communication within the program team and with internal and external customers
